Sailing near shore with gusty offshore winds between 5 and 20 knots. Just prior to these clips, I sailed pass the camera with a reefed main and smaller jib. As luck would have it, the wind was light when reefed, and the largest gust of the day occurred under full canvas.

Sea trial of a trysail that was made for a much larger boat (for storm conditions). My idea is to use this in winds of less than 25 knots. I might remove much larger main sail, boom, and gaff. We might then call this smaller sail plan a "winter" rig.

A short clip from test sailing with Panope's new Mizzen. Please excuse the very poorly shaped, proof of concept sail. I'll soon have a proper sail made. A longer video explaining the rationale and construction process will follow.

In this video, I test the strength of Panope's rudder stock and steering quadrant by loading these materials to failure.

The soft mud performance/behavior of the 46lb Ultra Anchor is explored more thoroughly.

.....and then I became tired of it. Last flight was in 2018. Many fine memories. Probably will not fly again.

Day sailing on Oct 19 2024. A nearby, land based, NOAA weather station measured the wind between the low and upper 20 knots, Gusts in the low 30's. In the more open water, wind strength was higher.

In this test, pumping rates were compared between "high voltage" and "low voltage" conditions.

Structural corrosion is accelerated by the presence of seabed (mud) that is trapped in the (hollow) rollbar of a marine anchor.

In perfect (no wind or current) conditions, Panope is backed into a slip. At slow astern speeds, this vessel cannot be steered with rudder alone. Instead, astern "steerage" is accomplished by applying short bursts of AHEAD power against the rudder that is positioned hard-over in the OPPOSITE direction...
